We have seen a lot of posts on AI…let us see some other details about AI. In this post we will talk about Strong AI vs Weak AI.

Weak AI;

Weak AI is the AI that we encounter in our digital lives everyday. It is the chatbot that talks with us, the Alexa that plays music for us, the Siri that answers questions for us and more. Weak AI is also known as narrow AI or specialized AI. Weak AI is designed to do just one task well. As an example, it can play chess well like the computer Deep Blue. After playing chess well, it cannot chat and answer your questions next.

Weak AI functions by understanding the user and their preferences and predicting the next course of action for them. Facebook feed is one example where Facebook presents information according to your interests and helps you take decisions for the next action!

Weak AI is automated to just do one task well. It has not yet been designed to do multiple tasks well.

Some examples of weak AI are:

Chatbots

Spotify Shuffle

Siri and Alexa

Self driving cars

Strong AI:

Strong AI or artificial general intelligence(AGI) or deep AI is the AI we hope to have in a couple of years down the line. It is the AI that is supposed to have multiple capabilities. It can learn from one task and apply it onto another task. In short it is supposed to have human like intelligence. Human beings are smart enough to do multiple things and learn multiple things in their life time. This is what strong AI hopes to achieve in a couple of years down the line.

We hope strong AI will learn from things and predict them according to the changes in environment. Strong AI will hopefully have more common sense and exhibit more needs and emotions.

Will this type of unsupervised strong AI be safe for the world? That is a fact that remains to be seen…

  1. Before few years, Alexa and Siri were appreciated as revolutionary. You wrote about AGI now. This is a challenge in embracing a developing technology in a way. When I start building a feature, by the time it is released, it becomes outdated. RoI is in patala-loka!
