In the US, when the New Year dawns, there is candy, when it is Valentines’ day – there is candy, when it is Easter – there is candy, when it is Halloween – there is candy, when we go to the pediatrician – there is candy, when we go to the dentist – there is candy… can you guess what is there in India wherever there is a festivity or when any gift has to be given? The yellow metal – “Gold”!! 🙂 With “Akshaya Tritiya” just around the corner – I see numerous advertisements relating to buying more of the yellow metal!! ” 🙂

Gold:

India is a country which loves the yellow metal! 🙂 Any size and shape, we love it!! 🙂 The price of gold has been soaring all the time and the prices have only been climbing more and more over the years. The pandemic may have dented its growth a little but I think all is well now and the price of gold is only going to increase more now.

I see numerous advertisements boasting of fine and intricate gold ornaments in almost all the advertisements splashed on TV. I must admit it looks so beautiful! 🙂 There are gigantic gold necklaces, gold pendants, gold rings, gold choker and more! The gold designs become bigger and more elaborate as the years have passed on…But I have never understood the reasons behind it…

Days to buy gold:

While it is considered to be auspicious to buy gold, new articles and silver in North India on “Dhanteras”, the South of India has its own special day to buy gold – “Akshaya Tritya”. On the day of “Akshaya Tritya” people buy gold as it is believed that it will bring good luck and prosperity. And this year Akshaya Tritya falls on 3rd May 2022! 🙂 So, you can imagine the extravaganza all around… 🙂

The practice:

While dowry and other practices may have reduced, there can be no wedding in South India that can be solemnized without asking “How many sovereigns are you giving for your daughter?” by the groom’s side by an strata of the society.

Sometimes, it is also a matter of pride for the bride’s family to give so much in gold at the time of wedding. They present their daughter with fancy necklaces and rings and more. I have never understood the reasons for putting so much gold during weddings.  Because after all the wedding extravaganza is over, all the elaborate and beautiful gold ornaments go back right into a bank locker.

Even if there are plenty of weddings to attend to during a period of time, what is the point of flaunting all the gold jewelry?

Some reasons:

Agreed – buying gold maybe one way to evade inflation but buying so much of it and hoarding it is totally pointless, IMHO.

Once upon a time people believed that buying gold was a good investment. But considering that nobody ever sells their gold jewelry, how can it be a good investment?

Balance is always the key and I always think a little bit of gold is fine to keep as it is our culture but too much of any thing is never going to do any good.

What do you think? Is buying gold jewelry a good idea or not?

  1. Well I do live in the City Of Gold, there is nothing that sells better in Dubai than gold. But I do agree with you, it is useless to buy too much. Children of nowadays though seem less enamoured of it!
