We know Meta owns Instagram, Facebook and Whatsapp.
When I heard that Instagram was removing end-to-end encryption from users personal chats from May 8th, 2026, I was not sure what the exact implication would be. End-to-end encryption is when the conversation between two parties is totally secure and nobody can eavesdrop on the conversation, not even the platform( Of course, nobody was really sure that private DMs anywhere were truly encrypted, but it was still stated so on paper)

With end-to-end encryption being officially removed from Instagram, Meta can now openly monitor our chats and personal DMs. Meta says this is being done to comply with law enforcement, child safety groups and low adoption of end-to-end encryption by users(it had to be manually turned on) For common users, I am not sure whether removing E2EE(end-to-end encryption) is a great thing as many chats are possibly being monitored.
I could not feel the effect of Meta’s E2EE being turned off initially. After a while though, I could detect that chats were being read after it started suggesting things following personal DMs ;( which did feel strangely creepy…
In the best interests of all users, it is best to not have DMs or engage in any private chats on Instagram as they are being monitored.
