With Whatsapp policy updates shaking the online world in January 2021, the whole of my digital world seemed to be moving towards other social media messenger platforms. One was definitely ‘Telegram’ and my new software toy! 🙂 Here are a few of my findings about Telegram:

Telegram:

  1. It is a cloud based messenger app with seamless synchronisation across devices
  2. It can be used on tablets, smart phones and computers
  3. It was developed by Pavel Durov and his brother Nikolai. Most of the team originally came from St.Petersburg in Russia
  4. It was first launched on August 14, 2013 for iOS devices and for Android devices in October.
  5. The development team is now based in Dubai
  6. The source code for Telegram messenger is available on GitHub

When I wrote this article about ‘Whatsapp groups : Boon or Bane’ , I never knew another app would come along that might listen to all my suggestions! 🙂 Here are a few features of Telegram that make it totally scintillating! 🙂 (as of today)

  1. Privacy does seem to be big deal in Telegram. Users cannot be added to groups without explicit permission from the user.
  2. Users can have total control over who can call them, whether they can be added to groups, and whether you will be used a reference link when forwarding messages
  3. Phone number can be totally masked and can be made invisible to everybody
  4. There can be a maximum of 200000 members in a group
  5. Groups can have a persistent chat history and admins can have different rights
  6. We can have improved voice chats with our contacts
  7. You can set a auto-delete timer on the messages that you send. You can auto-delete the message after 24 hours or 7 days (the messages though will be downloaded on the devices)
  8. Any picture can be set to self destruct within a minute after it is viewed( this erases the picture completely in the receiver’s gallery)
  9. We can create invite links for groups that can last for a limited time or a limited number of uses

These are some amazing features of Telegram! What do you think of them? 🙂 Will it stand the test of time and ensure greater privacy for its users? Time will tell.
