Knowing the difficulties of remote work

I have always worked remotely in my second career as writer. During the Covid years, this was the greatest blessing. Remote work is a great way to work as it increases productivity and offers many other advantages too. I did not spend time commuting daily and it was quite a blessing to not sit in Bengaluru traffic each day working out the different traffic strategies for the day.

Being a freelance writer/blogger for several organizations at different points of time, I could easily write or create e-learning videos by making use of different types of technology. Instructions would be given on what I had to write (either a post or any other type of content) and all I had to do was to write content according to that.

It worked out very well and both sides were happy. Some organizations also had weekly meetings to know the updates each week. I delivered content according to the expectations and I was duly paid.

So, where was the struggle of remote work?

‘Remote work’ is great if you see your co-workers and manager or any supervisory authority at least once in a while(it would have been nice if I had been able to see somebody/anybody sometime!) But since I was a freelancer most of the time, I have never seen any of my co-workers/colleagues in person ever.

I believe that there is a good connection that happens if you see somebody in person. You understand them better and they understand you better. There are subtle body signs that can be understood only by seeing a person in spite of the fact that I only had to professional work.

I definitely struggled with the fact, that the in person connection was not there. Since in-person meetings were not there, there is a possibility of different kinds of judgements and severe communication gaps too. I maybe the only one who felt that way or there may be many others who felt that way too.

All in all, remote work is awesome and works best only if you meet the your team at least sometime….at least, that is my belief!

  1. I am sure there are many who feel like you do… you need a human element or a face to relate to when working from home. Covid had its moments of loneliness, but after that phase, jobs turned hybrid, which was a good thing, I guess. Hope you find your human connections soon! 🙂

With poor-wifi, unstable-internet, power-cut (gift of Tamil Nadu!!) plays a huge role. More over, it is easy for a poor soul like me to show the office mood at family members. And more importantly office environment provides a dedicated atmosphere for work. But Thanks to the poor infrastructure, we lose thousands of innocent lives in poor roads every year, just because they are traveling on the road. When considering that, I think – will I see better life in my life time!
