I am no great foodie but I do/did have a sharp sweet tooth πŸ™‚ But a person with a sweet tooth cannot have a sweet tooth forever. Time and age slow us down and we recognize the differences between the needs and wants. After a while a sweet is a “want” not a “need” πŸ™‚

India has plenty of food choices and food habits change dramatically even within a state. I am from Tamil Nadu and I know Northern Tamil Nadu food habits will change from Southern Tamil Nadu food habits. If we take the simple idli and dosai, that is known all over India, the way to make it varies vastly between the different southern states itself. Each state has a different proportion of rice and urad dal ratio and the taste and texture of the dosai and idli vary greatly. I personally prefer the taste of my state as I am used to it.

Having said that, what is my comfort food?

‘Comfort food’ is something that gives ones maximum happiness when eating it and it reminds one of their warm and happy days or the best days of their life at home.

My daughter will actually answer the question about “What is my comfort food” on my behalf beautifully! πŸ™‚ I can eat ‘thayir sadam’ and ‘dosai’ anytime of the day. I can eat dosai in the morning, noon and night. πŸ™‚ (yes, I am that crazy about it!! :)) ‘Thayir sadam’ or ‘Curd rice’ is another great comfort food for us Tamilians….we need to finish our afternoon lunches with ‘thayir sadam’ and pickle for maximum happiness πŸ™‚ And it is supposed to be good for the gut too! πŸ™‚ ‘Dosai’ reminds me of my mother and her way of making crispy and yummy ones and pairing it with delicious chutney and sambhar!

So, what is your comfort food? What does it remind you of?

  1. When I was a child (and I confess, I still imitate like one sometimes now) and my father asked me what I wanted, I’d request dosai with a mix of fear and curiosity. Later Puri took its place. Then adai, chapati.. It doesn’t mean I’m not loyal to my comfort food, but my preferences kept evolving. But one thing remained constant; the paruppu pongal (some call it venpongal, which I totally deny) made by my mother.
