What is the most talked about or used app today? It is ‘Zoom’!! With ‘Work from home’, ‘Study from home’, ‘Art from home’, ‘Yoga from home’, ‘Dance from home’ and every other ‘from home’ option…the whole world is dependent on video conference apps to continue their life during the pandemic !

One such video conference app is ‘Zoom’ which just shot to popularity just around December. We can connect with friends, family, colleagues all by means of ‘Zoom’. These are the simple features of Zoom if you are unfamiliar with it:

  1. The free version of the video conferencing app can host around 100 participants per meeting
  2. There is a time limit of 40 minutes per meeting
  3. Interestingly, in Zoom, the host has a lot of power
  4. The host can record the meetings

Here are the vulnerabilities and some problems that users faced with it:

  1. ‘Zoombombing’ bceame a reality after miscreants bombed into uninvited meetings and posted prohibited content
  2. Some recorded personal videos of various Zoom meetings were suddenly found online!
  3. One of the users accused Zoom of leaking data to Facebook and violating privacy

After all these technical woes and their corresponding patches, Zoom 5.0 is here! Here are its new features:

  1. Zoom 5.0 was released on April 27, 2020 (yes, 3 days back only!)
  2. Zoom’ will provide enhanced AES 256 bit GCM encryption for all meeting data
  3. ‘Security controls’ are now grouped together as an icon
  4. All ‘waiting rooms’ are turned ON by default now
  5. Meeting IDs are removed from the content sharing window so that participants cannot share it with anybody else by accident
  6. The host can now remove unwanted participants
  7. There are new enhancements to leaving and ending meetings(if the host leaves, a new host can be selected)
  8. The minimum password length for meetings is 6 characters now
  9. All meetings will only have authenticated users or approved email users from organizations
  10. Do you have a user who is out of line in a meeting? Hosts can now report any troublesome user to Zoom’s Trust and Safety team for review.
  11. Zoom clients have till May 30th to upgrade to the new version.

As ‘Zoom’ grows and matures with all of us, it is up to us to use them wisely!

This is the last post for the #BlogchatterA2Z challenge and I hope you enjoyed the journey, just as I enjoyed writing it! 🙂
