Tell me you are one of the few who is not watching Valmiki’s Ramayan and Uttara Ramayan reruns on DD these days in India!! 🙂

Ramayan on DD:

For those who are not familiar, Ramayan is a religious epic and it was aired for the first time on Doordarshan(DD), the only TV channel available those days in India from the years 1987 to 1989. The serial was a runaway hit those days and traffic used to come to an absolute standstill to watch this serial…

What better way to keep India inside the house than by playing the same show on DD and make everyone watch Ramayan today too! Fast forward to today and that is exactly what has happened. In spite of millions of other channels, Ramayan and Mahabharat continue to rule and amass maximum viewership from users. Ramayan has become the most watched show on television in India today surprising many.

The story of Ramayan:

The ‘Ramayana’ was originally composed by Sage Valmiki. Lord Rama is said to be most perfect husband and son. He is illustrious, gentle, loyal, and caring. He is the seventh avatar of Vishnu. He is the son of King Dhasharatha and his first wife Kausalya. He gets married to Mother’s Earths daughter, Sita. When Sita gets kidnapped by Ravana and is taken to Lanka, it is Lord Rama with his loyal monkey forces and Hanuman who rescue her and bring her back her safely to Ayodhya. This in short is the story of Ramayana.

There are many intricate and little stories all along the epic. It is wonderful to read and see the Ramayana.

Why Ramayan?

We in India are extremely religious and I am no exception. Ramayan was written to show all the human characteristics of love, loyalty, jealousy, good and evil and how God lives through them all.

I don’t know how, but reading a noble book such as the Ramayan is sure to give you a lot of peace and happiness.

Have you enjoyed reading or watching the Ramayan? What has been your experience reading or watching the Ramayan?

  1. I’ve read the Ramayana. Not the original of course. And watched it as a child. But not now. However I do recommend that everyone must read the epics.

  2. I have watched Ramayan several times and different versions as shown on TV through these years. I believe we should read our epics.

  3. Watching Ramayan on DD was an affair to remember. All the members used to gather infront of the TV before the start of the serial. There used to be rounds of discussions after the episode was over among the grown ups. Listening to them shedding light on the various aspects of human behaviour and circumstances was a great delight. I remember requesting our Maths tuition Sir, when I was in 10th, to keep the weekly test after the Ramayana episode was over. Such was the craze.

  4. I have always been a curious soul and that is what go me to Ramayan also. It is one of the best epics. I haven’t read it in full but heard it while it was being narrated in a group. Though I haven’t seen the epic Ramanand Sagar version, I have seen the cartoon one as a kid. It has so much to teach us. Lovely post Jayanti 🙂

  5. This is the second post related to Ramayana I’m reading on A2Z challenge for the letter V. I’m not watching Ramayana. My first introduction to the epic was through a bengali comic book “chhobite Ramayan” – Ramayana in pictures. Read it multiple times. Then there were renditions of great poets who discussed the essence of different episodes of Ramayana.
