Small town charm….Katpadi, Vellore

I live in a gigantic city which is exploding in all directions….but when I do visit a small town like Katpadi, Vellore which is situated in Tamil Nadu, I do find it charming in many ways.

The first thing that always catches my attention in a small city is the lack of traffic ..My Bengalurean mind cannot even comprehend how empty the roads can be without cars at all. If this was Bengaluru, we would all be driving 1 inch distance from each other! (face palm!) and each vehicle would seriously be vying to get ahead of the other. Actually, when the population of a city drops, traffic on the roads also drop which is nice. We are less edgy and much more happy people 🙂

Another thing which is related to traffic about a small town is that if we plan to go to any place, we can just go there in 10 – 15 minutes time. In Bengaluru, we plan our trip to any place in hours, not in kilometers(ha,ha) If I plan to go to any place in a place like Katpadi, I can actually reach it exactly on time and probably in 1/100th of the time! (which is a miracle…) In Bengaluru, we have missed a movie because of being stuck in traffic and the distance to be travelled must have only been 8 – 10 kms and we left an entire 1 hour earlier!

In a place like Katpadi, even if we have to catch a train at 3:30 p.m., we can leave coolly by 2:45 or 2:50 p.m. and reach well ahead of time(that was seriously something that my Bengalurean mind could not comprehend initially)

Yet another small town charm is that, the roads are in good condition because of the most obvious reason. Less traffic and lesser number of cars on the roads also ensures that the roads stay in good shape.

Life in a small town is slow. Nobody is in a hurry to go anywhere and the bill arrives slowly in restaurants, people do not drive that fast(because if we drive too fast, we might just leave the city :))there is no crowd at cinema halls(unless a popular movie actor’s movie is releasing) and more.

Cost of things in a small town are much, much less which made me seriously wonder why things are so atrociously expensive in bigger cities. Movie tickets are cheaper, groceries are cheaper, vegetable prices are cheaper, fuel is cheaper, schooling is cheaper, college is so much more cheaper and more.

The air also seems to be so much more cleaner and the small town charm is sweet.

Waste management is simpler and fruits and vegetables seem to be more authentic with no color dyes added to them.

The only drawback is probably that there is nothing much to do for entertainment and there are no great job opportunities(business is the primary job) for all and there is no airport either. Apart, from that the charm of small cities is enticing enough to pull me there.

Any idea why we are all stuck to magnanimous cities that are bursting in all directions?
