Should women be financially independant?

Listen to this article

“Financial independence?” – what is that? Once upon a time, very few women understood the meaning of this word(inclusive of me!) Education involving engineering/medicine/post graduate degree/graduate degree were all a distant dream for young girls. Why should they study all those complicated matters was a common thought. Most were encouraged to only do their 10th or 12th grade and get married quickly.

Times evolved and girls were encouraged to study all subjects on par with boys. They could get their hands on anything and study all that they wanted to. I did my Computer Science engineering 27 years ago and there were equal number of boys and girls in my class. So, yes, times had changed…

What is financial independence?

‘Financial independence’ is when the woman in the house earns enough money to support herself totally and completely without any help from the man.

After a woman completes her education, she should obviously work. But should she be so passionate about her job that she becomes totally and completely financially independent even after having a family? Is it possible and is it necessary? (and having such a job may involve long and tough working hours)

In light of today’s rising costs and other factors, I think it is necessary for today’s woman to be financially independent. It gives her a sense of satisfaction at being able to use her education properly and seal all financial holes in the family if any. Women can also spend more confidently for their own necessities and might get more respect and admiration within her own family. She will also be more content and happy as a whole.

But ultimately, it is the woman’s choice. Does she want to be totally financially independent? Can she manage both work and home simultaneously?

What do you think? Should women be financially independent?

  1. Women should be qualified to earn living but not at the cost of their health. Managing home is almost entirely the responsibility of the woman. If she can manage work and home equally well, go for it otherwise stick to one duty.
