It looks like we technologists are always running on “FOMO”(Fear of Missing Out) and have to always catch up with some tech wave or other! Just a few days ago, a new AI model ‘DeepSeek’ was released and we have all bent backwards to understand the fuss about it! 🙂 ( and apparently, we from India are the most curious ones and have downloaded it the most!)
Here is what I have understood so far:
- ‘DeepSeek’ is an AI model founded by Lian Wenfeng in July 2023 in Hangzhou, China
- It is similar to other AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT but it is different in many ways
- Similar to ChatGPT, it can answer questions with respect to Math, coding, reasoning and any other logical question
- There is DeepSeek- V3 which is an AI chatbot and DeepSeek – R1 which is a reasoning model
- As of today, it is only restricted to text based queries and cannot do other tasks like generating images and more
- I have not tried it – but it does look it will censor some type of sensitive questions and not answer them safely
- DeepSeek is said to be faster and more accurate than ChatGPT.
- It is also cheaper than ChatGPT for advanced queries with subscriptions starting from $0.50/month for DeepSeek and 20$/month for ChatGPT
- It was also supposedly built at a cheaper price than OpenAIs ChatGPT. It was trained on lower cost Nividia chips which is definitely a game changer for future AI models. Lower cost and better performance AI models? I am sure more companies will seize this game changing idea…:)
- It can be accessed via the app or on the web or via a API
- It is an open source model which means it can be freely used by the public and they can modify it, work with it and build it into any of their services
- As the AI race heats up to see who has the upper hand, there is also a buzz that DeepSeek may have used OpenAIs AI models to obtain information and train its own model! (a process which is known as “knowledge distillation) (Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9vm1m8wpr9o)
- Maybe the most concerning part about DeepSeek a week after its release is its privacy factor. As a privacy enthusiast, I am concerned to know that data provided by the user during chat sessions might be stored on servers in China, keystrokes may be monitored apart from other data collection and data storage issues.
- In relation to this many countries have moved to ban DeepSeek – notable among them being Italy and Taiwan. The US state of Texas and Australia have banned the use of ‘DeepSeek’ on government devices. Countries such as South Korea plan to question data privacy issues related to ‘DeepSeek’ .
India has not banned it as yet. If you would like chat with DeepSeek, here is the link:
As with everything on social media, do be mindful of what you ask it, as it maybe recorded! 🙂

In conclusion, ‘DeepSeek’ is definitely a game changer for the AI community. With low cost and high performance AI models, I am sure the future is bright as ever for the AI world!
//Maybe the most concerning part about DeepSeek a week after its release is its privacy factor. We need to be clear. All social media companies track us and sending data to USA every day 🙂
I saw deepseek. Their API costs are really tempting. Competition is good. But $20 a month is a luxury. Hope it will be cheaper soon.
As of today, data collection, data storage and data privacy are becoming big issues. It may have been done by all companies and countries earlier, but now, it is looked at seriously. Every body is going under the scanner and new laws are being enacted to restrict the unnecessary usage of personal data which is applicable to all countries and companies(like India’s DPDP, GDPR and more US laws)
DeepSeek is fun to play with as all AI tools and I am sure we technologists will have a gala time in the future evaluating more AI products! 🙂
Nice post amma, I learnt a lot about DeepSeek from it. But doesn’t ChatGPT also store data on its servers to train it’s models? How would DeepSeek be any different than this? Also, the fact that DeepSeek used ChatGPT’s model to train it’s own seems interesting to say the least…
Yes, ChatGPT and all social media companies store data to snoop on individuals but now, the laws are getting tighter and privacy offences are looked at with a microscope…and we want to regulate it more than 2 years ago…
