We might have heard of the terms, security and privacy and might have thought that they might be similar. But are they similar or are they different? They are actually very, very different. Let us see the differences between security and privacy in this post:
Security
- Security is keeping software, systems and individuals safe from hackers and breaches
- There are different types of security concepts – encryption, decryption, firewalls, layered security, endpoint security and many, many more
- The main aim of “security” is to reduce the effects of attacks and breaches
- An example of “hacking” may be when your credit card information is stolen and is misused by hackers!
- There are numerous security certifications on the market to upskill the employees – CISSP, CCSP
Privacy
- Privacy is defined as the “right to be left alone” and making sure none of our personal information is mishandled
- Privacy has different concepts entwined with it as well along with different privacy laws for different countries – differential privacy, privacy by design and many other concepts
- The main aim of “privacy” is that an individual’s personal information should not be misused
- An example of “privacy breach” may be if you give your personal information such name, dob and it is shared with any other third parties
- There are numerous privacy certifications as well relating to the laws of privacy – CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT
