I went through engineering college admissions for both my son and daughter in the past 5 years and like it or not, there is one branch that seems to be most sought after even today….(and I graduated from that same branch years ago! :))
What is that branch? Any guesses? I hear some of the people who graduated from this branch and who are currently working feel burnt out or exhausted, though some have already retired! 🙂 While some feel that their children should not take up this branch or its close allies at all, others feel it is fine to take it since that is where the “big bucks” and opportunities are! 🙂
So, what is this branch? It is nothing but COMPUTER SCIENCE!! 🙂 as many of you might have guessed it…
Though many seem to be interested in other branches, but finally they end up in Computer Science only for good growth opportunities and career potential. In my age, there were only 30 seats for Computer Science stream in my college…but that has increased several times and there are almost 2000 seats for Computer Science and its specializations in private colleges now! Since the number of core Computer Science seats alone cannot sustain the increase in population, more Computer Science specializations(like IoT, Cyber security, Data Science) have also been added.
Is this importance for Computer Science and its specializations warranted?
I would say, yes….it is good to choose Computer Science branches because it offers a lot of scope and job opportunities in this digital age of AI. Placement companies come primarily for Computer Science and the other circuital branches only(whether academic degrees bring ready to work professionals is a separate topic)
However, the child should be interested in the branch and willing to study it as well. If the child is interested in some other branch, it would be good to pursue it sincerely, and good avenues will open up there for sure.
What will be the future?
I think Computer Science and its related branches will continue to hold the fort and students all over will still be clamoring for the same! 🙂
