Misconceptions about India

Listen to this article

It has been a long, long time since we returned to India to the point we feel like we never left India in the first place…;) For those unaware, we stayed in the US from 1996 -2010 and moved to India and have been here ever since…

As I have now stayed in India for a very, very long time , I now understand the misconceptions that we have when we stay outside the country for a prolonged period of time.

It is very hard to understand the currents of vibrant, dynamic and young country like India when staying outside(even when we come for short stints)

  1. India is dirty (Yes, cleanliness is a bit lower, but it doesn’t mean that there are no clean places at all)
  2. Corruption is there(yes, it is there…but there are many non-corrupt things as well and many things are getting digitized to reduce corruption)
  3. Women are put down(not all the time and not everywhere…nowadays, women are more educated and many educated women strive to be financially independent)

4. People do not get paid as much as they get paid abroad(not everybody who goes abroad becomes a millionaire and not everybody who stays back in India becomes a pauper – it just depends on your location and your profession when you stay abroad) I haven’t seen many educated people struggling in their careers or salaries in India. Yes, initial stage hiccups will be there but software developers do get paid well.

5. It is cumbersome to get certain things done…(yes, it is more cumbersome to get certain things done, but there are many other things that are not that cumbersome so… it all evens out finally) 😉

Are there any other misconceptions? Do list them and I can discuss them too…

And it is home to most of us wherever we are settled in life…so India has to be the best! 🙂
