I am a security and privacy professional and years ago, I blogged about how CCTVs or ‘Closed circuit television’ improved the security of any physical infrastructure. CCTVs are only used for recording and surveillance purposes. They are supposed to be used at entry and exit locations to catch mischievous elements in case, anything untoward happens.

When CCTVs first made their appearance, they were used at important locations by a few organizations. As widespread acceptance grew, they are omnipresent and adopted by all. Their advantages are understood and they help many organizations with their security strategy and catching culprits in troublesome situations.

But the flip side, today is, that it is present anywhere and everywhere. In the name of catching culprits, they seem to be invading one’s privacy too. CCTVs seem to be recording every person’s everyday habits like who is going out, when are they going out, whom are they going out with and more. Is it really that necessary to have so many CCTV cameras, is something I wonder?

I am still sure it is useful in high profile places like jewelry show rooms, banks, commercial establishments and more. But using it excessively in personal spaces might be infringing on a person’s private space.

Have you also noticed CCTV cameras everywhere? What are your thoughts on the same?

  1. IMHO, the number of CCTV cameras in our country is quite low compared to our population. If you look at the ratio between the population and the number of cameras, we might be one of the least-surveilled countries. Given the crime rates, increasing the number of CCTV cameras could be beneficial if it helps to reduce crime.
In some parts of the world, authorities have started using CCTV footage to identify individuals and gather personal information automatically. When this technology was first introduced, there was a global outcry about privacy concerns, with many calling it undemocratic. Ironically, now even democratic countries are considering adopting the same technology. All the best!

    1. I am sure that is true for commercial spaces… but I see many popping on floors of apartments.. and many other personal spaces as well… for what, I don’t know….

  2. You do make a good point. However, CCTVs have become an integral part of many homes as well with the growing number of staff people have nowadays. It has pros and cons. Hard to argue having seen both the sides of the coin.
